Hike # 6 -- The 20 Miler -- went from the State Line Outlook on the Palisades Parkway in Alpine NJ to the Riverdale Presbyterian Church in Riverdale, NY.

Participants: Patrick B., Sean B., Michael For., Michael Foster, Gabriel L., James N., Michael N., Dominick P., Michael S., William W., Erik Z. Adults included: Margaret L., Matt Aronberg, and myself.

We had a perfect day to hike, sunny and breezy in the low 60's. We started at Riverdale Presbyterian Church (RPC) at 7:00 am and traveled by car out to the Stateline Lookout. We then traveled south on the Long Path Trail which runs along the top of the Palisades, parallel to the Palisades Parkway, so we were never very far from civilization. Along the 12 mile path we passed amazing views of the Hudson (and our homes), the Women's Federation Memorial, beautiful woods, birds, and animals. (Yes, there are snakes and salamanders even in New Jersey!) We even had the opportunity to perform a valuable service twice along the way when we extinguished 2 small fires that were probably started by tossed cigarettes from the cars on the Parkway.

Once we reached the end of the Long Path it was time to head east across the George Washington Bridge, all 1.5 miles of it. For those who have a fear of heights, it is quite an accomplishment to do this, so now I consider myself accomplished! After the bridge, we headed north along Cabrini Blvd. following the Upper Manhattan Trail through the Cloisters and down to Broadway, all the way up to 230th Street. After one last rest in Ewen Park, we headed up Riverdale Hill and down Henry Hudson Pkwy. back to RPC and home!

All had a great time and although weary, agreed it was the best hike so far. And we all will appreciate the ride next time we go to Alpine to camp! -- Ellen Beltran, Troop Committee Member, and Hike Guide.
