| Two adult members of our Troop have started their Wood Badge. ASM Dino Forzano and myself (TCM Mary Ellen Willen) spent two three-day weekends taking their Wood Badge training. We learned leadership skills and how to best work together. We were all part of Troop 1, the troop formed by Lord Baden-Powell, and were put into 7 Patrols. Dino is a Bob-White and Mary Ellen is an Owl. We participated in many group learning activities and there was the spirit of friendly competition throughout. We ended the training with presentations of patrol projects and the approval of our “ tickets;" five projects or activities that we have to accomplish in the next 18 months. These projects must be in relation to our respective positions in Scouting. Edna Acquafredda is our Wood Badge Councilor and it was very nice to have had her there. Because this was here first time as a Wood Badge trainer, she earned her third wood bead. When we complete our tickets we will receive our “Wood Badge," replicas of the wooden beads that the Zulu King Dinizulu awarded to Lord Baden-Powell, and from which Lord Baden-Powell took two of them, knotted them on a leather thong, and were used to be the only proficiency badge worn by Scoutmasters, to be worn around the neck. We will be very proud to join the ranks of Wood Badgers everywhere, especially to the 9 Wood Badgers our troop already has. -- Mary Ellen Willen, Troop Membership Coordinator, and Wood Badge Candidate. |
